By: Festus J Lahai

During the 27th Commonwealth Business Forum recently held in Samoa, President Julius Maada Bio outlined Sierra Leone’s dedication to digital connectivity as a key driver of economic growth and a tool in the fight against corruption on one hand, and a significant one to drive agricultural productivity on another hand.

In his address on the “Connecting the Commonwealth” panel, the Commander-in-Chief showcased the digital initiatives spearheaded by his administration, aimed at promoting sustainable development and developing transparency.

President Bio pointed to Starlink’s critical role in expanding internet access throughout Sierra Leone. “Starlink is a groundbreaking solution for connectivity, reaching even the most remote areas,” he stated.

"With 14 out of 16 districts already connected via fiber-optic technology, this collaboration with Starlink is set to enhance nationwide digital accessibility."

He also discussed how technology can help reduce corruption by facilitating cashless transactions, increasing transparency, and improving governance.

"This initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s Human Capital Development Program, which seeks to improve access to quality education and training for all citizens."

Lauren Dreyer of Starlink praised Sierra Leone’s willingness to embrace technological advancements and announced plans to establish a business presence in the country, further empowering local enterprises and communities.

Through these targeted digital investments, President Bio’s administration aims to create a more inclusive economy, positioning Sierra Leone as a regional leader in technology-driven growth and unlocking new economic opportunities on the global stage.
