The Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow hosted a warm and community-focused celebration of Eid at its Chancery Building on Korovy Val in Moscow on 21 March 2026.
The event brought together members of the Sierra Leonean community, with a strong emphasis on students currently studying in the Russian Federation.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo welcomed 28 newly arrived students for the 2026 academic year and urged them to stay focused on their education. He highlighted the importance of learning the Russian language as a key to academic and professional success, cautioning students against last-minute reliance on support structures like the Students’ Union.

Reinforcing this message, Minister Plenipotentiary Ibrahim Saspo Sankoh encouraged early communication between students and the Students’ Union leadership to ensure timely embassy intervention particularly on visa and academic matters.
Student representation was led by Mr. Emmanuel Kalie Kamara, (President Sierra Leone Students Union NUSS-RF) who thanked the Ambassador for his accessibility and support. He highlighted ongoing challenges such as delayed allowances and late arrivals of students an issue he admitted lies with the host country.
He also shared positive news: 26 students many in medical fields are expected to graduate this academic year.

Mr Kamara announced plans for a week-long celebration of Sierra Leone Independence Day in Moscow by students and sort the direction and support of the Embassy.
Additional contributions came from another Students Leader Ms. Kadija Karim, who encouraged unity and kindness among students, and Ibrahim Dugba, who raised concerns about the high costs of publishing in reputable academic journals.

The event concluded on a celebratory note, with attendees enjoying food, conversation, and a sense of shared community marking not just Eid, but also the strengthening of ties among Sierra Leoneans in Russia.
